As consumers, we are exposed to hundreds of advertisements a day. Whether or not we acknowledge this type of media, they are being stored in our subconscious and have the ability to alter the way we view products as well as ourselves. By recognizing the tactics used to sell us products, we have the ability to rise up and take back the power used to bring us down.
Re-Model Me pinpoints what we as humans want at the core: happiness, love, and acceptance. Many times, advertisers will use our basic desires to blur the lines between want and need in order to sell us a product. It is important to take a step back and ask, “In what ways does the media tell me I can be happy, loved, and accepted?” Using love as an example, what messages are we sent from the media that tell consumers how to look, dress, act, think, and feel in order to be loved? By asking these questions, we become more aware and informed consumers.
Created by Katie H. Willcox in 2011, Re-Model Me aims to de-program the years of harmful media messaging we have been exposed to as consumers. The program delves into the core of advertising tactics that teaches girls that beauty is their value and sole purpose in life. The goal of this program is to educate and empower girls by giving them the tools to self-awareness and self-love.
What began as a program for students across the country, Re-Model Me has grown into a 2-day seminar and workshop for women of all ages to become informed and educated about media manipulation.
